The town has a rich history dating back to 1876 when it was named for General James K. Polk who commanded American forces during the Mexican–American War. The first post office in Federal Heights opened on October 15, 1876. The name change came about because of the discovery of gold in nearby Greeley by George Sibley and his partners from Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. In 1902, Federal Heights had a railroad depot with five cars and two clerks serving customers; however this business closed in 1912 due to budget cuts by then Mayor John Baca Jr.. In 1916, Fenton Girdler established A&P Department Store which became one of the largest grocery stores west of the Rockies until it merged into Kroger in 1984. The store closed late 2001 after more than 100 years in business! On July 1st, 1976 Federal Heights voters passed an amendment to their local charter establishing a school district that would serve all residents within its borders regardless of income or prior enrollment status; also known as "The Taxpayers' Charter Amendment". This amendment allowed property tax exemption for any new homes built within limits set by the school board including those between Federal Heights and Aurora (now Auraria). As Of 2018 there are 4 elementary schools and 2 middle/high schools located within Federal Heights boundaries while another high school will open soon adjacent to Interstate 25 just outside of town limits! There are currently no plans or movement towards annexing neighboring towns such as Northglenn or Englewood but rather Federalsheights wishes to provide quality educational opportunities for residents from both municipalities! As with most things political here at home we have seen over time some backlash from people who feel like they have been taken advantage of by our elected officials thus far...mainly Developers/ Developers groups out there trying to take advantage without anything coming back for them other than increased taxes!!! Some folks get upset about something that doesn't affect them directly like having their daycare moved next door etc., but really what happens when your community falls apart? We've all seen it happen before so I think it's worth taking a look at what we're doing right now before throwing everything up against each other again :-)
