Longmont, Colorado is an unincorporated community in Weld County, Colorado, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Juan Mountains and shares boundaries with the towns of Grand Junction and Aspen. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Longmont was Arapaho Chief Manuelito in 1776. In 1868, prospector John Wesley Powell discovered gold in Longmont along theplatte River. The town began to grow rapidly as a result of its location in one of the most productive gold mines in America. By 1870, Longmont had a population of 569 people and became known as "the breadbasket of western Colorado". A school was established in 1871 and by 1880, there were more than a dozen businesses operating in town. In 1902, long-time mayor Levi Coffin died; his son Orville Coffin took over as mayor and led Longmont through several difficult times before becoming widely respected for his management skills during the early 21st century economic recession. During World War II, Longmont served as an air raid shelter for Fort Collins and other military installations within Weld County. After Pearl Harbor, Longmont joined many Western cities that declared themselves neutralities during World War II by refusing to contribute funds to war efforts. However, much like other Denver-based cities that did not ratify neutrality ordinances (such as Littleton), local officials were unwilling or unable to enforce them effectively due to lack of resources. In 1951 when Interstate 25 bypassed downtown Denver through Boulder County farmland east of I-25 near Belle Fourche Lake lakefront property owner Harry Black agreed to pay $1 million for land comprising what is now downtown Boulder – part of what would become known as "The New Town" – serving as its nucleus while development took place around it including major league baseball player Nolan Ryan's home until it burned down in 1978; this area currently includes much older Downtown Boulder which has seen some redevelopment since then including upscale housing developments by Pinnacle Real Estate Partners LLC After years of planning developing what became North Capitol Mall from parts of adjacent properties across Central Avenue between First Street and South Congress Streets developed into one large shopping center anchored by Sears & Roebuck

It is part of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. The first European to explore what is now Longmont was Spanish explorer Juan José Córdoba on December 14, 1776 when he discovered an encampment of Pueblo Indians near present-day Longmont. The name "Longmont" originated from a mountain peak in central Colorado called "Alta Longmont." A post office called Alamosa was established in 1872, and it continued to serve as its primary mailing point until 1907. In 1903, a group of local businessmen founded the Town Company which purchased all but one lot in Alamosa Township from Amos Sennett for $2,500 (). The town began to grow rapidly due to its location and accessibility to natural resources such as coal and oil shale deposits. By 1920, Longmont had become an independent municipality with a population over 30,000 people (). In 1924, voters approved Resolution 910 authorizing creation of a city government within the limits of Longmont (). On October 2nd 1925 Mayor Waddell issued Ordinance No. 1 creating the City Government of Longmont () which became effective November 15th 1925. As part as coreservices Provisions were made for Police Department Headquarters (now known as Fire Department Station #1), Sewerage & Waterworks Department Headquarters (now known as City Hall), Ambulance Service Headquarters (), Public Library (), School District No 7 (opened September 1923) and more! In 1930 downtown streetscape changes were made including paving out much lower portion below High Street so traffic could flow through without coming up against buildings; this eliminated many areas that were once difficult or impossible to navigate because they bordered on busy streetscapes tourist traps! On April 25th 1936 new mayor Harry Heckermeyer issue proclamation ordering streetlights be turned off at night beginning July 1st so that longontowners could enjoy their quiet neighborhoods during day time hours
