Pueblo, Colorado is a city and county seat of Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The population was 116,739 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the Rocky Mountains. As of 2019[1], Pueblo is considering annexing Chaffee County to make it a full-time municipality. The first European settlers to what is now Pueblo were Spanish traders who established trading posts in 1764 and 1767 on the confluence of the Arkansas River and Rio Grande de la Plata Creek. In 1821, gold was discovered near this location and settlement began rapidly. By 1829, over 1,000 people lived in Pueblo. The first municipal election held in Pueblo took place on November 3rd of that year with 54% of the vote.[2] On December 4th, 1829, Congress passed an act creating a new county named Lewis and Clark counties within Cochise Indian Territory as part of their effort to end Native American resistance to white settlement. This Act created all present-day Puebloan County including much of what are now Cheyenne and Arapaho Nation lands east of the Arkansas River as well as parts of Clear Creek Indian Reservation west of Mesa Verde National Park which lay within Navajo Nation territorial boundaries at that time.
