The city experienced economic prosperity through its years as a subsidiary station on the D&RGW line before experiencing setback following World War II when production at local steel mills ceased due to wartime shortages caused by American entry into World War II. However, since then steamboats have been an importantstay for commerce and tourism near Steamboat Creek which formed its namesake stream within town limits In recent times there has been efforts made by Mayor Tom McNamara to revive downtown business activity while also expanding arts options available within town limits including emerging music venues like Gramercy Tavern and Tractor Shed Live Oak Music Hall while also creating opportunities for outdoor activities such as mountain biking and fishing along Withlacoochee Creek within town limits

The first permanent settler in Steamboat Springs was George Fenton, who arrived in 1876. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the river. In 1882, he married Sarah Jane Sprague, who had also come toSteamboat Springs from Illinois. The couple started a small grocery store and raised four children. In 1912, the Fentons bought a sawmill on the riverbank, which they operated until it closed in 1951. During this time, Steamboat Springs became known as one of the leading lumber centers in Colorado. The milling industry passed away during the late 1990s but its legacy is still felt today because of its close proximity to Steamboat Valley and its many historical landmarks such as the Fenton Cabin and Sawmill Museum.
