Steamboat Springs is a small town in southern Colorado, United States. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pueblo–Jicarilla Borough. Steamboat Springs was platted in 1875 and named after Florence, Italy. The first settler in what is now Steamboat Springs was John Smeaton. He built a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1876 and spent his summer days fishing and hiking along the river's edge. In 1877, he married Sarah Winnemucca and they started to established a farmstead on the east side of the stream that flows through town today. In those early days there were no roads or phone service so farmers relied upon horseback riding, wagons or mail order for goods and services. In 1881, George Davenport set up an ice cream business near where he still lives today on Main Street near mile marker 51st (now Connecticut Avenue). By 1886, there were three ice cream parlors in town – one by Davenport himself, one by his son-in-law Wm Henson and one by Harry Jorgensen (later known as Harry Jorgensen & Sons). In 1895 Cattlemen's Association No 2 organized a fairgrounds here which later became known as the Gadsden Fairgrounds In 1902 Steamboat Springs entered into an agreement withDenver & Rio Grande Railroad to provide transportation for tourists visiting Ute Mountain National Monument west of town In 1909 steamboats took passengers across Central Park Lake from downtown to Centennial Boulevard where they boarded buses which took them back downtown
