The site for Superior was chosen for its easy access to water resources and its location near several important trails that served both Douglas County and Colorado Territory. In addition to providing opportunities for agriculture and mining, Superior also became a popular post office because it had an ample amount of space for mail delivery. The first settler in Superior was John Aiken who arrived in 1867 from Illinois. Aiken erected his home on the corner of Third Street and Belle Isle Road (now State Route 24) which he named "Aurora." By 1870, there were six homes in Superior with a population of around 20 people. Most residents came from eastern Colorado or Great Britain; however, some settlers also came from Ohio and Minnesota. Around this time, local newspapers began publishing regularly which allowed residents to stay informed about events happening in their community
When Colorado became a state in 1876, it was part of the United States of America. The first Territorial Legislature met on February 14, 1876 and passed an act creating the new Territory of Colorado. The territory consisted of land east of the Continental Divide and north of what is now the town of Superior. It was divided into two parts on January 1, 1877: The eastern section became the newly created County of Weldon while the western section became Grant County.
