The Superior Observatory was founded in 1875 and is one of the oldest continuously operating astronomical observatories in the United States. The Observatory's telescope, the 5-meter Aperture Spherical reflector (ASR), has been operational since 1923. The ASR served as a medium-sized aperture telescope for optical astronomy research and observations of stars, planets, galaxies, and other astronomical objects. It was also used to measure aspects of Earth's orbit around the sun and make important advances in our understanding of climate change. Superior is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley–Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Superior" was given to the town by General George Armstrong Custer in his memoirs entitled "My Life and Adventures". In 1876, during the Gold Rush era, prospectors discovered gold near Superior and named the peak after General Custer in honor of his victory over an American military force at Little Bighorn on July 26 that year. The town began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived in 1881 and settlers came to purchase land around Superior for farming or mining purposes. By 1907 there were over 100 residents living in Superior. In 1914 Superior became a municipality with its own government which lasted until 1925 when it merged with Greeley into the larger Aurora metropolitan area. Prior to this merger, all municipalities within Weld County were divided into two areas: rural (northwest of Greeley) and urban (southwest of Greeley). As a result of these mergers many small villages within Weld County disappeared as their populations diminished while larger towns like Lyons grew more populous. It wasn't until 1984 that Superior again regained its city status as it absorbed the neighboring community of Loveland which had been teetering on dissolution since 1981 due to low tax base and high population density levels. The growth of suburban housing development throughout Weld County has led to growing concern about what will happen to portions of rural communities such as Superior if development continues unabated; however no definitive plans have yet materialized indicating that any such developments will take place without some form of regulatory oversight from either local or state governments concerned about inappropriate uses/values placed upon rural properties by developers seeking spotty zoning approval from bureaucrats instead of from citizens who should be able to speak up about potential problems because they live on those same properties!
