Wheat Ridge is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Juan Mountains and is northeast of Greeley. The community was founded in 1885 by John H. White and his wife Hannah Prentiss White. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge has a temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers. The first white person to live in Wheat Ridge was John H. White in 1885. He named the town after his wheat crop that he exported from Kansas City, Missouri. The original store was built on Main Street and it still stands today as a business district called "White's Place." In 1899, the Post Office moved from its original location on Second Street to what is now Fourth Street because of overcrowding in other towns in Weld County responsible for mailing correspondence to their citizens'. In 1902, George Washington Carver settled near Wheat Ridge and began growing corn, potatoes, beans and other vegetables hereabouts which became known as Carver's Cornfield or Carver's Valley due to him being one of its first settlers. In 1916-17 two members of the US Military Expeditionary Force (MEPF) were stationed at Ft Carson Army Depot when they discovered an abandoned uranium mine about 10 miles north of Wheat Ridge along State Highway 6A (now Snowmass Boulevard). They prospected for uranium there until their discovery led them back south seeking new opportunities; this discovery convinced President Woodrow Wilson to approve construction of atomic plants just east of Colorado Springs using uranium mined from Hale Mountain National Monument some 25 miles south of Wheatridge along State Highway 24A (now Interstate 25). In 1916, when the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Railway (D&A RR) built a line through town and proposed stationing hundreds of jobs at its new plant east side Main Street), mayor Harry White staged a protest against this development that quickly became known as "the wheat ridge Strike". The strike failed but public outrage over what they saw as railroad greed led to passage of state legislation establishing industrial zoning within town limits which prohibited any further construction until such time as railroad ties could be replaced by non-ferrous metals or other products that would not cause environmental damage. In 1954 Wheat Ridge annexed part of Aspen to become its second largest municipality by population after Aspen Village; however annexation never came about due to lack of political support from either party among residents or City commissioners who felt that annexed territory should have been given back to Aspen if it had been determined that their community would have achieved economic viability without being taken away from them – an assessment also supported by then Mayor Harry White himself during his final days in office prior to his retirement).
