In 1847, John Moses Browning submitted a design for a pistol-grip rifle to the Connecticut State Council. The council recommended that thegun be made available to all citizens, and it was in this year that the first firearm shirt was designed by Browning himself. The gunsmiths at Hartford Arsenal produced these shirts for the defense of New Britain during the American Civil War. The NRA's first official firearms education program took place at Hartford Arsenal in 1934.
