By the late 1800s and into the 1900s, most gun sights had either digital or mechanical systems that allowed them to be calibrated in increments of 1/2 inch (12 mm). With advances in technology came problems with accuracy however; some guns could only be shot at distances up to about 25 yards (20 m). The introduction of airguns in the early 1900s led to a shift towards using smaller aperture designs for firearms as these devices were easier to control from a distance. By this time, many people had become proficient with using firearms and so there was no need for precision gun sight designs any longer.

The first successful handgun discharge was made by American John Moses Browning using this weapon in 1856. This type of firearm became known as an "automatic." By 1900, almost all firearms had beendesigned with sights in mind; however, some models continued to use open sights for target practice until about 1910 when they were replaced by adjustable sights such as those found on shotguns and rifles.

The town began as an agricultural community in the 1760s and grew rapidly through its partnership with Hartford in trade and transportation. In 1797, New Britain became a county seat of Hartford County. As a result of its location on the main road linking New York City and Boston, NewBritain became one of the most important commercial and transportation centers in eastern Connecticut. The growth of the town also led to its creation of schools, churches, mills, farms, and other businesses. The town's economy declined after World War II when Interstate 95 cut off access to much of eastern Connecticut from outside sources. However, efforts have been made to revive New Britain by creating new jobs and developing its infrastructure.
New Britain was first settled by the English in 1614. The town was chartered on July 24, 1635, and named for the New England colony of Connecticut. In 1784, the town became a part of Hartford Township. The population grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and in 1814, the town built its own courthouse and jail. With increased development came an increase in crime, which led to the construction of a new police station in 1834. New Britain also became known for its cheese industry, which continued until around 1960.
