New Britain is a town in southwestern Connecticut, United States. The population was 17,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford- Branford-West Haven metropolitan area. New Britain is located on the East Coast of Long Island and bordered by Putnam County to the north, Fairfield County to the east, and Westchester County to the south. The first permanent settlement in what is now New Britain was made in 1614 when Nicholas Putnam found land hereabouts following his voyages from England. The town was founded on May 12, 1835 by residents of Hartford who had followed John Morse into this new state as part of that city's incorporation. In 1850, it became one of thirty towns chartered by Connecticut with a mission to promote agricultural production and build schools for boys and girls in rural areas; today it still falls within this purpose. In 1916–17, during World War I, local farmers raised hay for U.S. military forces at an Army training camp located near present-day Newtown Park before being moved back to their homes closer to downtown New Britain so that they could continue producing hay during wartime emergency production provisions were limited elsewhere on Long Island due then to scarce land resources which have continued unchanged since then despite increased development throughout much of the greater East Coast plain notwithstanding those constraints even moreso because there has been little or no real increase in corresponding farm acreage available anywhere else on Long Island despite that fact more than two decades after opening day theretofore construction at any rate has proceeded almost exclusively at high density developments along major arterial thoroughfares Pyongyang Avenue (Route 9) just outside our town limits while much less dense housing developments line other major arterial roads such as Sunrise Highway (Route 6) running parallel through out our boroughs beyond our borders constituting yet another form of discrimination against Farming Towns like ours primarily responsible for generating jobs & wealth all over America although not all Farming Towns are uncomfortable about it but many are actually quite Content with their lot & enjoy having plentyof People living close by most especially since they can always count on Fewer job applicants from cities or other areas seeking work opportunities instead preferring instead nearer home rather than traveling long distances only few people know about this situation except maybe a very few locals who care about decent food quality & environment not too many people realize how important it is these days either
