In 1863-64, when Union troops moved into central Connecticut to suppress Confederate forces duringthe American Civil War, many businesses closed their doors because textile production had become increasingly important to war efforts. However, most people continued to live within walking distance of their homes or shops for everyday needs such as milk and eggs. One prominent business owner during this time period was Moses Frenchy; he operated a flour mill at Springdale Boulevard near present day Weymouth Trading Post shopping plaza until his death in 1917. Frenchy also served as Mayor of New Britain from 1898-1900 and from 1916-1917
