The name New Britain was given to it by General George Washington in 1784 as part of his plan for creating new towns in what were then British America. The first settler in what is now New Britain was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who arrived there on April 14, 1639. Colonel John Putnam sent him horseback messenger with news that a party from Massachusetts had landed at Shinnecock Bay and were making their way inland. Nicholas-Jacques built a small cabin near present day Main Street and started to trade with local natives; he also planted some trees which are still seen today near the bank of the River Thames just east of where Interstate 95 meets Route 6 (the old alignment). He helped start Congregational Church in 1645 and died soon after leaving behind three children: one married, one baptized but never lived to adulthood, and one who became an Anglican priest. In 1784 General George Washington ordered all American settlements be named after Governors or Marquis de Lafayette or other distinguished Americans; New Britain was among those chosen and its first settler was Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1639–1784). In 1814 Captain Amos Kendall visited New Britain while outfitting for exploration along US 1A (later I-95) between Hartford and Milford; during his stay he met many people including some who would later become signers of the United States Constitution such as Ethan Allen (1722–1804), Oliver Wolcott (1724–1800), Silas Deane (1727–1806), Caleb Strong (1733–1812) – all men from humble backgrounds like Conte. New Britain is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,331 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of New Britain County and it is part of the Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now New Britain were English colonists who arrived in 1624. The town was founded on October 15, 1637, by residents of Windsor, Connecticut as a trading post on the east bank of the Thames River between that community and London. On January 1, 1764, New Britain became an incorporated village under the name "Newbury". In 1814, when Connnecticut was admitted to the Union as a state, New Briton became part of that state's Second District. During World War II (1939-1945), much effort was made to produce munitions for use in Europe by General Electric Company's plants in southeastern Connecticut and elsewhere. A large number of men from this area served in both world wars including many who are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery National Memorial there. Today much activity takes place within New Britain due to its rich history which can be seen throughout its various businesses and organizations such as: The American Antiquarian Society; Appleton & Whitney LLP; Bass Pro Shop; Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; Bumped Inc.; Canandaigua Falls Brewing Company; Colt Manufacturing Co.; descendants of those who founded Yale University (founded 1634).
New Britain, Connecticut was a British colony in what is now the United States between 1764 and 1776. The area that became New Britain was originally part of the province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1764, the British Parliament passed an act authorizing the creation of a new colony on Long Island Sound, about midway between New York City and Boston. The new colony was to be called New Havenshire after the town in Hertfordshire, England from which it got its name. The original population of 2,500 was only small enough to support two ministers and their families. But by 1768, when the first governor arrived, there were over 12,000 people living in what is now New Britain. The first capital of New Havenshire was Hatfield Village where the governor's house still stands today. After a few years, led by Governor Jonathan Trumbull (1767-1774), a second capital was established at Norwalk which stood until 1825 when it burned down. In 1775, after three years of hard work under difficult circumstances caused by French activity along Long Island Sound - including raids on coastal villages and seizure of goods - Congress passed an act giving power to Governors Tryon and Clinton to make laws "for carrying into execution this Province's Just Prosecutions" against France thieves and pirates; as well as for preventing forced labor on Crown lands inside Canada during the War for Independence (the North American War). This legislation also provided for land grants totalling 1/4th acre (0.16 km²) each to those who contributed $1 per year towards supporting government expenses “according to such Regulations as may be made therein” – something that helped encourage settlers throughout central Connecticut to migrate from other parts of Great Britain seeking access to land that would become their home state (later Connecticut). Governor Tryon quickly realized that he needed help with governance and organization if he wanted his new colony to succeed: He appointed Samuel Chase as his first lieutenant governor with responsibility for civil affairs including defense; militia forces; trade; taxation; public works; construction thereof or any part thereof... This appointment signaled an important change in colonial life – one where governors would serve not just six-year terms but through multiple terms so they could continue building cohesive communities while also taking care of day-to-day operations
