Fenton and Latham developed their farm into what is now called "The Ranch" and began to sell goods door-to-door throughout Palm Beach County. The town was founded in 1835 by Captains George Mifflin and James Noyes. In 1861, Pompano Beach became part of Fort Pierce but reverted back to its original name in 1865 when it became an unincorporated community within Palm Beach County. The post office opened in 1870, but closed due to prohibition during that time period. The first hotel was built in 1915 by developer Jules Steinhoff on land donated by Colonel John Hangerfeldt Sr.. By 1930, there were over 50 businesses operating out of Pompano beach with a total population of 2,500 people. A fire destroyed much of downtown Pompano Beach on October 16th 1930; howeverFortunately no one was injured as a result only $5 worth of damage resulted from this fire which caused business closures for several days
