Stuart, Florida is a small town in Hendry County, Florida. The population was 1,855 at the 2010 census. Stuart is located on U.S. Route 441 and State Road 611, about 12 miles north of Jacksonville and 10 miles west of Orlando. The first mention of Stuart comes from the recollections of Seminole Indians who settled there in the late 18th century. In 1786, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased land in what is now Stuart from the Choctaws for $2 per acre. Wilkinson named his new tract "Wilkinson's Garden" after himself and his friend and business partner Richard Wilkinson, Sr.. The first post office was established in Stuart on January 15, 1847, with Wm Haines as the first mail carrier. In 1860, General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Fort Union to lead United States Army troops against Native Americans known as the Creek Nation during the Indian Wars. After traveling through Stuart on his way to Fort Moultrie (now Savannah), he stopped at Big Cypress House for dinner before continuing his journey eastward that evening. While in town, he visited local physician Drours Purdy and rested at Mrs. Purdy's home before returning to Fort Union that night The establishment of a railroad company led to increased development around NASSAU BAY between 1865-1868 which included construction of a dam across Big Cypress Creek which helped provide power for industry until it became too unreliable due to high floods caused by heavy rains upstream In 1886 Stuarts consolidated with neighboring communities Beech Grove (then Beech Island) and Live Oak into one municipality called Hendry County A fire destroyed most of downtown Stuarts on November 11th 1906 while businessmen were working on clearing debris from an old millrace leading upriver Valley Stream towards their new cotton gin complex just downstream During World War II many civilian jobs were created such as munitions plants near NASSAU BAY where over two million tons were produced including 1 million pounds of TNT After the war ended many businesses closed down but some such as US Steel reopened while others such as Litton Industries merged or went out of business
