In 1825, Captain John A. MacFarlane of HMS Enterprise discovered an underwater Passage connecting Tampa Bay with Cuba and realized this could be a valuable resource for naval ships traversing those waters. He gave some thought to whether or not to develop this passage and decided against it because he didn’t see any practical uses for such a route other than supplying goods between Tampa Bay and Havana (then Spanish America). In 1827, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Newton recommended using bullets made of lead instead of copper because they were less likely to cause injury when hitting something else (an idea first proposed by Jeffrey Linnell in 1819). As bullet technology improved over the years, lead Bullets became more popular among shooters due their durability and accuracy- even surpassing copper Bullets in some cases!
