The first gun target in Winter Garden, Florida was a 20-pounder shotgun on the property of Colonel John M. Worth in 1851. The first rifle target was erected in 1865 by Captain Julius Purdy and it continued to be used until 1892. In 1897, a 100-pounder smoothbore cannon was installed at the nearby Fort Brooke Range and became home to the Winter Garden Rifle Club from 1907 until 1933 when it was moved to nearby Plantation Hills Place. In 1934, the club changed its name to the Winter Garden Pistol Club and continued using the Fort Brooke Range for target shooting until 1985 when it closed down due to lack of use.

Winter Garden was founded in 1892 by J. P.Morgan and his wife, Jennie Morgan. The city was named for Jennie Morgan because she donated the land on which it was built. The city voted to name the city after Jennie Morgan in 1913.
