During World War II much of what is now Winter Garden was destroyed bybombing; most notably Shafter Elementary School which housed over 350 students before being rebuilt afterthe war using local lumberyards and foundry workers (many who had been apprentices at Pritzker Park). Reflecting this history, most streets within the old town are named for white Virginians who were instrumental in shaping Jacksonville’s modern-day landscape: James K. Polk Boulevard (named after president Polk), Andrew Johnson Boulevard (named after president Johnson), and Eleanor Roosevelt Boulevard (after First Lady Roosevelt). Today, Winter Garden remains a small but vibrant community with more than 1,200 residents; it is home to several businesses including Macy’s Department Store and Barnes & Noble bookstore chain; two colleges; and a number of arts organizations including orchestras and playhouses. The town also sees considerable tourist traffic due to its beautiful views of the Apalachicola River valley and its significant historical artifacts such as Jackson’s Masonic temple ruins located just outside of town on Old Cutler Road
