Cusseta, Georgia is a small town located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Cusseta-Emmett School District serves grades PreK-12. The first mention of Cusseta comes from 1821 when James Macon and his party discovered it in what is now Cobb County after traveling through then Union County on their way to Savannah. They called it "Macon's Ferry." In 1824, Major General Alexander Stephens and his army invaded Georgia and burned down several homes near the Chattahoochee River where they found Indian artifacts. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of white settlement in what are now Gwinnett and Fulton counties. In 1850, Judge John Neely Harper built a log courthouse which served as the seat of justice for seven years before being moved to Mableton in 1870. In 1872, he constructed a new courthouse which still stands today and was renamed after him in 1893. 3 more courts were added to this courthouse complex between 1902-1906: one for females (the Women's Court Annex), one for misdemeanors (the Men'sCourt Annex), and one for plaintiffs/ defendants who could not appear before court because they resided outside of Gwinnett County (the Special Court Annex). In 1912, an ordinance was passed establishing schools within 5 miles of every county seat with each school having 10 students per grade; Cusseta became one of these schools with Emmett Elementary School opening in 1916 followed by Sibley High School in 1922. A fire destroyed much of downtown Cusseta on November 15th 1921 but due to donations received from local citizens efforts have been made to rebuild including a library/community center/parking garage/main street restoration project that began in 2007 & continues today
