The town was first settled in 1837 by James Griffin and his family. In 1881, Griffin became the county seat of Cobb County. In 1907, Griffin and other towns in Cobb County voted to become a city and were named Griffinville after James Griffin's son-in-law, Elias Epps. The city was incorporated on November 2, 1913. On December 5, 1928, it merged with Roswell to form the larger city of Roswell . Griffin has been an agricultural community for much of its history. Agricultural produce includes cotton and corn; vegetables include tomatoes and eggplant; livestock includes horses and dairy cows; Nursery businesses include Flower Mound Nurseries (1925), White Sands Nursery (1927), HomegrownTree Farms (2007). A large variety of birds are found in the area including Bald Eagle (1876), House Sparrow (1994), American Robin (1966) and Gray Catbird (1982). In recent years there have been efforts to develop the town as a tourist center with attractions such as restaurants, museums and golf courses available within easy walking distance of each other
