Smyrna, Georgia is a town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,534 at the 2000 census. Smyrna is the county seat of Fulton County and home to both the University of Southwestern Georgia and Smyrna Community College. The first settler in what is now Smyrna was James Gist on December 4, 1821. The town was platted on July 15, 1827 by Jno. Bogan and Wm. Ladd as part of a large land grant from President James Kenedy to John Randolph Sr.. The Battle of Jonesboro took place on October 16-17, 1865 during the American Civil War when Confederate forces attempted to move northward from Atlanta towards Chattanooga through Smyrna. Union forces under General Jubal Early arrived at Jonesboro just after dark on October 16th and begun bombarding the town while Confederate defenders fought off repeated attacks throughout the night. By morning most of Jonesboro had been destroyed with only a few small buildings remaining standing; however, several hundred Confederate soldiers managed to flee back into Smyrna before they were surrounded and surrendered at dawn the next day. Today much of that loss remains typical fabrications perpetuated by Confederate veterans who have taken up arms against their own government since 1865: many businesses still bearnames that are associated with inappropriate or shameful acts committed during that time such as “Bloody Sunday” (the battle where over 150 men were killed), “The Day After” (April 14th when retreating Confederates burned down two homes in downtown Smyrna) or simply “Black Saturday” (October 8th). In fact it has even been claimed that almost all Gobbler’s Creek Bridges which span between Macon County and Fulton Counties were destroyed by Union troops during this period including one located in present day Alpharetta which collapsed near its intersection with US 78 years ago! Today though there are some active businesses that continue to thrive thanks largely to Downtown revitalization initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Tommy George: streetcars running along Main Street bring shoppers into downtown for lunchtime pick-ups then head out again for dinner; renovated public restrooms have brought about an increase in business for local restaurants; new art galleries dot the central square adjacent to courthouse; new construction projects are ongoing throughout downtown including a $10 million mixed use development called Pearl Square which will see mixed commercial/residential spaces within walking distance of both Central Park and City Hall; coffee shops operate everywhere from convenience stores near School Street Station all the way up into midtown where live music concerts take place nightly outside various bars/restaurants
Smyrna, Georgia was founded in 1777 by the English. Smyrna was a small town at the time and it was only accessible by boat. It became an important port because of its position on the Savannah River. The town prospered until 1815 when the American Civil War started. Smyrna was destroyed by Confederate forces but later rebuilt. Smyrna is now a cultural and historical center for the region.
