The history of firearms in Twin Falls, Idaho dates back to the 1870s. At that time, this small town was located on the eastern bank of the Snake River, about 25 miles west of Boise. The area now known as Twin Falls was first settled by Europeans in 1849. At that time, there were no guns available for use by civilians. Instead, local hunters and trappers relied upon their pistols and rifles to protect themselves from game animals and other predators. In 1875, a man named J.D. Humphrey purchased land east of Twin Falls and began developing it into what is today known as Humphrey Ranch. Humphrey became interested in making shotguns and handguns available to civilian users and he also developed an early rifle system called the “Humphrey Rifle” which utilized a muzzleloaderattachable stock with a crosshatch patterned barrel designed for accuracy at long range. In 1896, Captain John Lacey organized a group of men who had volunteered to help build a road from Boise to this site on the Snake River. The group decided to name their new venture “Twin Falls Arsenal” after the river where they planned to construct its facilities. Assembling these materials proved difficult given that most goods transported overland at that time were unloaded onto wagons before being transported downriver to Fort Hall near Salmon Arm for carriage upriver past Boise City until reaching Twin Falls Station (later renamed downtown Twin Falls). This process took many days due primarily to lack of transportation options following the completion of construction on May 1, 1896 – more than one year ahead of schedule! This event is often considered as marking the beginning of Twinsburg County when formal government functions commenced within its borders starting with incorporation on November 1st, 1897! With World War I looming large in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson placed an order for 2 million rounds of ammunition including 500 rounds per day for all army officers above lieutenant colonel status dated October 20th 1918? This order represented approximately one-seventh (11/16)of all ammunition produced duringWWI! In response thereto Captains George Sibley and Hiram Atherton established two gunsmith shops adjacent unto each other at Seventh Avenue South near Main Street in downtown Twin Falls providing ready access both Friday evening through Sunday morning? These shops provided workmanship unparalleled anywhere else throughout western United States!!! With World War II looming large in Europe as well various shortages occurring due thereto Captains Sibley & Atherton established four gunsmith shops providing ready access both Friday evening through Sunday morning??? All munitions production ceased immediately on September 2nd 1945!!!!!
