The name Arlington Heights comes from General Washington's estate near present-day Robbins Road and Irving Park Avenue. In 1907, the first park was created in Arlington Heights: Clark Park. In 1912, an ice cream parlor opened in Tryon Park across from Navy Pier; this shop remains open today as part of local chain DARE (Downtown Area Restaurants & Entertainment). In 1922, during World War I veteran registration drives were conducted throughout Cook County by United States War Veterans' Administration agents; these drives helped lead to the creation of Cook CountyRecords Department which housed all public records for Cook County until 1936. This department also played a role in developing police forces and firefighting capabilities within City limits, eventually becoming one of Chicago's largest municipal services providers. In 1926 Mayor John Purcell dedicated two blocks east of McCormick Place on Wilson Boulevard as "The Great Lawn", which still represents an important location for events such as political rallies and other large gatherings on or around that block today. This square footage would eventually grow into One Archery Plaza adjacent to McCormick Place today - home to many local businesses including Sears Holdings Corporation's Menard's grocery store before it went outof business in 2014 In 1932 Mayor James Cermak dedicated another major block east of Wilson Boulevard - this time renamed Roosevelt Drive - as "Arlington Hills". The boundaries then remained largely unchanged through much of suburban growth that followed until they were changed again following annexation by Burr Ridge in 1974; Burr Ridge became its own municipality separate from Butte Township withinCook County . On July 1st 2017 both cities merged into Chicagoland under current government authority
