Belvidere is a town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. As of 2000, Belvidere was the smallest community in Sangamon County and the only one without a post office. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The first settler in what is now Belvidere was John Stephenson who arrived from England in 1824. He named his land Belvidere after an English place called Bevilhaven which he had visited while on his way to India as an army officer. Stephenson built a log cabin on the site where he lived until 1830 when he sold his land to John Birney who erected a larger cabin and began to grow corn, beans, wheat and potatoes on it. In 1833 Birney sold his land to Amos Wright who built another large cabin with outbuilding and began raising cattle and pigs on it. In 1835 Wright donated his land to the town of Belvidere which incorporated under its name on February 15, 1836. Belvidere's growth followed typical village-wide trends during its early years; most people were farmers or small traders working their own lands until rail transportation made growing crops much more practical during the mid-19th century; then came manufactures such as flour mills (1846), automobiles (1927) and radios (1949). By 1960 there were just over 100 residents living in what had been just 50 acres of forested land including 60 buildings constructed between 1840 and 1860 by local men employed by Mather & Company furrier business owners in north central Illinois Construction contributed importantly both materially and symbolically to downtown development across Chicago following World War II The late 1940s saw increased manufacturing activity but also increasing residential housing demand due to migration from rural areas into urban areas throughout much of North America Priorities shifted towards suburban jobs opportunities resulting in declining commercial property values leading businesses near downtown shutter during that period' Commercial real estate activity spurt again beginning in late 1990s thanks largely to new investment through either bought or leased space resulting especially since about that time consolidation among major retailers led mall developers around 1997 initiating large scale redevelopment efforts many precedents violated including several failed attempts culminating with Sears Holdings Race To The Top Plan Achieving Peacock–like status within Chicagoland Despite setbacks longtime efforts continue despite recent shutdowns
