The town has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was part of the territory taken by General Harrison from the Potawatomi Nation. In that year, General Harrison's forces destroyed a village called New Buffalo on the riverbank near present-day Belvidere. The village had been built by members of the Potawatomi nation who were fleeing British oppression and had lost their homes in Wisconsin. New Buffalo was one of several villages destroyed by General Harrison's forces during his November 1794 campaign against Native Americans in what is now eastern Illinois. At that time, Indian Territory extended from northcentral Indiana to central Missouri and west to Texas land that lay between those two jurisdictions. This area became known as Indian Territory because white settlers there did not participate in or acquiesce to treaty negotiations with the Indians which resulted in ceding this land to them in exchange for goods and services rendered during their traditional hunting and fishing activities. In 1847, when General Harrison took over control of Indian Territory from Michael O'Hara, he decided to move many miles upriver into what is now Belvidere Township so that European-American settlers could live closer toIndian affairs rather than traveling through what was then vast Shawnee Nation Country。 Accordingly, on February 14th (or March 1st), 1847 – just thirteen days after taking control of Indian Territory – General Harrison ordered Captain John Pemberton's brigade under Major James Butlerto march immediately southward along Raccoon River Road all the way to Raccoon Rapids where they would disembark and proceed downstream on footpast numerous fordsand rapids until they reachedpresent-dayBelvideREstationation site onMarch15th (). Belvidere was platted in 1836 as a village by Federalist Party members under the name of "Belvidere." The name change came about because it was difficult to spell and many residents objected to being called "Belville" after a city in England. In 1868, the village changed its name to Belvidere after Commodore John P. Belvidere, who had fought during the Mexican–American War and been awarded an honorary degree from University of Michigan (now Northwestern University). The first post office was established in 1837 and served until 1840. The current post office building was built in 1909 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. In 1830, one mile south of town on State Route 16 was located what is now known as White Water Lake. This body of water contained enough coal mines to support a small community but no settlers arrived until 1835 when John Fenton built his mill on the site which became known as Fentonville. A little more than two miles northeast of town on state route 34 were located two other coal mines that supported some early settlements before they all failed due to lack of water supplies and competition from other mines nearby. By 1850, only about 30 people lived in Belvidere with most coming from towns near Chicago or Rockfordshire County IL In 1857, voters approved a new school district that would include much of central McLean County including Belvideere Township . Belvidere was founded in 1810 by the Belvidere Company, a group of investors led by Samuel Colt. The company built a mill on the river and began to sell flour and other goods to local farmers. In 1814, the company sold its mill and moved to a new location in what is now downtown Belvidere. The firm continued to operate until 1919, when it merged with another business, the Northwestern Pulp and Paper Company.
