Buffalo Grove is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,812 as of the 2010 census. Buffalo Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies about 20 miles (32 km) south-southwest of Chicago's downtown and 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Evanston. The early history of Buffalo Grove can be traced back to 1808 when French traders traveled through this area on their way to the Great Lakes region. Captain Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his men were travelling through central Illinois when they discovered a rich site for fur trade at what is now Buffalo Grove Township. The site became known as Fort Erie and later as Fort Dearborn after its creation by General Anthony Wayne in 1795. In 1827, the village of Buffalo Grove was platted around what is now the intersection of Interstate 90 and State Route 35W which served as its commercial center until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. Ammunition production began in Buffalo Grove in 1873 when local gunsmiths created a small cannon factory called “Nugget” Workshops adjacent to their homes on South Western Avenue. The village is named for buffalo that were grazed on the area until the early 19th century. The first settler in Buffalo Grove was John Lyle. He built a log cabin on what is now Clinton Road in 1857 and started to trade goods with his neighbors for land and animals. By 1860, he had built a larger cabin and began to sell goods door-to-door through his farmstead. In 1861, he married Eliza Jane White; they moved into their own house in 1862. A year later they bought 160 acres (0.8 km2) of land east of town and started to cultivate it; their first crop was corn in 1865. In 1867, Buffalo Grove became part of Kane County when it was organized as a township; its first mayor was George Biddle (1910–13). In 1870 the township voted to change its name to Buffalo Grove Village; the new name reflected the fact that much of what had been done within the original boundaries of the township were now located within the newly formed village limits. By 1880, buffalo games were being played at various locales throughout Kane County as part of annual celebrations honoring autumn's arrival—one such game took place at Buffalo Grove on October 15 that year. Some residents even went so far as to plant trees around their homes so they could enjoy fresh vegetables all winter long! One notable resident from this time period who lived close by and contributed materially to development of today’s village is former Mayor James Jahnke (1920–24). After serving two terms as mayor during World War II he returned home after V-E Day and served one term more before retiring effective January 1, 1959; during this time he also resumed his farming operations which continue today under his son Jim Jahnke Jr., Sr., since 1986!
