Centralia is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Centralia is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by settlers from Ohio and Indiana who came to central Illinois to explore what was then a new territory. The original town site was on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1879, Centralia became an incorporated town when it joined the larger village of Centralia Heights in Kane County. The first post office opened in 1881. In 1903, Centralia voters passed a resolution creating a school district that would include all of Kane County east of Interstate 90 and south of State Street; this moved Centralia from being an incorporated town to becoming a city status under Illinois state law. In 1912, due to World War I recruitment efforts by the US military authorities in Kane County, Centralia began accepting applications for service members resident within its city limits as well as those living within five miles (8 km) of any military installation or camp located on or near the village's boundary line. As such, Centralia became one of only two towns in Kane County (the other being Hollandtown) that accepted military residents during WWI; both villages remained unincorporated after their incorporation into cities later that year. On July 1, 1948—just over 50 years after its incorporation into City Status—Centralia voted to change its name to "Centerville". This name change did not take effect until January 2nd following ratification by City Council vote followed by Mayor election day process. Centralia was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located near the current site of Chicago. The population was 5,000 at its peak in 1881. Centralia is now a ghost town and census-designated place. The first residents of Centralia were the Potawatomi Indians who lived on the banks of the Chicago River. They built their village on land they had acquired by raiding other tribes and capturing their goods. In 1818, the United States government bought this land from the Potawatomi for $200 plus interest. The area that became Centralia was then rural and unproductive because it lacked an outlet to water or agricultural products. In 1821, Daniel Webster began construction of what would become his final political campaign headquarters; he called it “Webster’s House” after then-Senator Daniel Webster (Republican). Webster won that year’s presidential election with 54% of the vote against John Quincy Adams ( Democrat ). In 1835, Illinois voters ratified a new constitution which made Centralia a city; it did not until 1840 when Governor James Kapp created a charter for it which allowed for more business development and growth within its borders. During World War I, many citizens served in military units such as the First Battalion of Northwest Indiana Volunteers (later renamed Camp Pendleton) and Company A 213th Infantry Regiment Combat veteran Edward Leland Cummings donated his home at 3405 N Newberry Ave to be used as part of training camps for American troops fighting abroad. After World War II ended, many soldiers continued to live there while their families moved out into larger townships nearby such as Hoffman Estates or Northbrook Park where they could find housing and jobs on post-war reconstruction projects similar to those being undertaken in downtown Chicago by Mayor Richard Mauer during that time period. At some point during this time period about half of all people living within five miles (8 km) east of Downtown Chicago died due to air pollution from heavy industrial operations conducted in central Illinois factories during that time frame
