One of the most significant events in ammunition history took place in Centralia, Illinois on May 25, 1892 when the first complete set of factory-loaded cartridges was ever made. At that time, Centralia was one of the most important firearms manufacturing centers in the United States. The Ammunition Manufacturing Company was located at 5221 Eastern Ave., and it was here that many of the first meaningful firearm rounds were created. The Ammunition Manufacturing Company began production of rifle rounds in 1887 and soon became well known for their quality product. In 1892, they produced a new type of cartridge which became known as the “Centralia” round. This cartridge featured a wadcutter design and was designed to resist fragmentation when fired from modern rifles. It is interesting to note that this particular round is still used today by some hunters who prize its accuracy. In addition to producing rifle rounds, the Ammunition Manufacturing Company also manufactured shotgun shells andshotgun bullets. Shotgun bullets were particularly popular during the early years of shotguns because they could be quickly reloaded without having to go out into the field again and again. Centralia is a town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. Centralia is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Centralia were James and Nancy Hitchings who arrived around 1800. They cleared land and built a log cabin on the banks of the White River which they named "Hitchingsville". In 1824, they married Hannah Stephenson and moved to central Illinois where they started a cotton plantation. They also raised livestock and grew crops. By 1830, their farm had grown to 4 square miles and they employed 10 people. In 1836, when Joseph Wirth settled in central Illinois he began trading goods with Baltimore for goods carried down the Ohio River by boatloads of slaves from Georgia and Tennessee. After having lost his business acumen due to this trade Wirth decided to start a ranching operation which he called "Wirth's Prairie" (now known as Wright-Patterson AFB). He leased 7 square miles from David Dixon for farming purposes only, but he soon realized that it would be very difficult to keep up with demand for foodstuffs from roads being built through his property. He sold his interest in "Wirth's Prairie" in 1840 to John Pendergast who ran it until 1850 when it was purchased by Simon Cameron whose family operated it until 1880 when it passed into public ownership following an act of Congress The first school was established in Centralia on February 12, 1846 by Mrs Sarah Morse Whatley as part of a larger project authorized by President James K. Polk entitled "A Plan for Promoting Learning". This initial school was taught by subscription rather than accepting students because there were not enough teachers available at that time On October 5th 1861 Centralia became the first town in Macon County when its citizens voted 3-2 to incorporation into the county . The vote followed a petition presented by Jno Bickerton . The civil government of Centralia began on November 1st 1861 with Aldermen Geo Bates (left) , Hiram Sutter (center) & Ebenezer Dickey (right). On January 8th 1862 Samuel Morse opened shop #1 within what is now Wright Patterson AFB after winning an election against incumbent George Bates . Samuel Morse continued serving as our town clerk until 1900 In 1902 we elected our first Mayor - Dr John Haines
