Centralia, Ill. is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Centralia is one of the few towns in Kane County that has not shrunk since its founding in 1871. There are still residents living in the original homes and businesses from when Centralia was established as a small village on the banks of the Kankakee River. Centralia's economy is based on agriculture, including raising chickens, pigs, and cattle; manufacturing products such as flour and feed; and tourism for its natural beauty and historical attractions. The first people to live in Centralia were farmers who founded the Village of Centerville around 1871. The first school in Centralia was built in 1875 by teacher John Laddington. In 1907, centralIA became a city with a population of over 5,000 people after two rounds of voting by the voters of Kane County about whether or not to become a city. This vote resulted in 50% approval from voters due to concerns about economic stability if centralIA did not become an official city. Centralia prospered as an unofficial city until World War II when it lost most of its residents to military service or relocation overseas. After the war ended, many local businessmen decided that they would rather stay independent than merge with other cities within Kane County- which would have provided them with less control over their own economy and politics. A few years later, another vote resulting from concern about declining agricultural production caused central IA to rejoin Kane County as an officially incorporated town once again on December 10th 1951 with a population of 3 thousand citizens only five years after it had been separated from Kane County at all! Although there have been times during recent history when centralIA has experienced some difficulty (such as during the Great Recession), overall it has always managed to remain stable despite difficult times - something that can be hard to do given how much infrastructure needs repairing orReplacing throughout rural America! In 2017/2018 centralIA celebrated 150 years since being chartered as an incorporated town! This event included numerous events such as parades throughout downtown streets honoring our community’s founders (many who are still living) along with performances by local bands on Main Street amphitheater throughout January &February 2018! We also hosted several food drives which collected nearly 100 pounds per day for our benevolent Hunger Relief Program!!!! These efforts helped us fulfill our goal set back before we even started!!!

During World War II, many locals worked on military bases located outside the town limits-most notably Camp Evans north of central Kane County and Camp Cooke south of the village center-but many also volunteered their time or services with various organizations such as American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), United States Catholic Committee (USCIC), National Working Party (NWP), and Veterans' Relief Administration (VRA).
