Centralia, Illinois is a small town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,727 at the 2010 census. Centralia is the county seat of DeKalb County. The name Centralia comes from the Potawatomi word "Kaduta" which means "headquarters." The village of Centralia was platted in 1857 by James Wickenheiser and Walter Smith as part of a larger land grant to John Jacob Astor given him by President James K. Polk in 1882. At its peak in 1890, Centralia had a population of 1,100 people and employed 60 merchants and 30 farmers. By 1910 the population had fallen to 1,027 and the employment to 381 men. A fire destroyed most of Centralia on November 7th 1909 when about 400 residents were living near the Great Chicago Fire that burned for two days killing over 100 people and leaving thousands homeless In 1913 when prohibition became law in America, Centralia lost its status as an alcohol-free community due to prohibition laws being passed by state legislatures at that time rather than through regulation from local governments like it had been under before Prohibition began In 1951 when Interstate 70 was built through central Illinois connecting Chicago with Detroit via Indianapolis (then known as Lafayette), Centralia lost much of its business because traffic stopped traveling alongMain Street which ran right through town center
