Charleston, Illinois is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. As of the 2010 census, Charleston had a population of 100,811. The official name is "The City of Industry". It was founded by Nicholas Ludlow in 1835 as a small manufacturing town on the Chicago River. Charleston was one of several towns to be founded by both Ludlow and John Stephenson during the early years of settler immigration to what would eventually become Chicago. In 1847, Stephenson built the first brick building in Charleston and named it "The White House". The town grew rapidly due to its importance as an agricultural center and its location on the banks of the Chicago River which made it an ideal transportation hub for goods moving between Chicago and other parts of Illinois. In 1870, Charleston became part of the newly organized Des Plaines County, which included all of Cook County except for a tiny sector east of downtown that belonged to Evanston Township. The remaining eastern half of Cook County remained with Evanston Township until Shorewood developed along Lake Michigan close to where Charleston now stands. By 1900, shorewood had replaced much Of Charleston's industry including brickyards, tanneries and breweries as well as most commercial buildings associated with early twentieth century agriculture including stores, churches and post offices; however some older brick structures still remain today including Stroud's Store (now known as Macy's) and Post Office #2 (now known as Sears). The Chamberlains were instrumental in developing early Chicago through their business acumen and investments. They also helped create the first Methodist church here in Charleston. It is this religious affiliation that has kept Charleston active since its inception – it remains one of the most active African American townships within Illinois today! Today, Charleston continues to thrive as a vibrant community rich with history and culture. Its residents are proud to call themselves “Chamberlainites” and continue to contribute back to our Midwest city namesake’s progressivism and progressivism-inspired values!
On November 15, 1828, the first slave insurrection in United States history occurred when three slaves attempted to escape from a plantation in Charleston, Illinois. The slaves were quickly apprehended by their owners and brought back to bondage.
