In January 2009 Brown announced he would run for re-election but withdrew from consideration after being indicted on corruption charges; subsequent reports indicated that this indictment may have influenced Brown's decision not to run again. On November 5th of that year Barack Obama won re-election as president of the United States defeating John McCain by a wide margin; however some political analysts argued that Obama could have had better chances if he had been running against Republican nominee John Cornyn instead of White House newcomer Sarah Palin
