East Moline is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first known settlers in what is now East Moline were two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Mayfield, who arrived from Connecticut in 1795 and erected a log cabin on the bank of the Mississippi River. They named their settlement after John Mayfield, an Englishman who had come to America as a trader in the early 1800s. In 1814, Isaac and Jacob's brother George moved from Hartford to east Moline with his wife Rebecca and six children under the care of his father-in-law Amos Clarke. There were about eighty people living in what is today East Moline when George died in 1819. His widow became manager of the home place where she raised her family for over fifty years until her death in 1878; they are buried there together with their husbands and children. In 1847, John Milton donated land along Illinois' present border with Iowa to be used as a township; East Moline Township was established on March 15, 1847 (although it only received its current name two days later). In 1861, following annexation byChicago of neighboring Du Page County (see below), East Moline was incorporated as an independent city under the name "Moline." During World War II, Al Capone's girlfriend Lena Headey lived with her parents and siblings inEast Moline while he worked as one of several truck drivers for Walther Kappelbaum & Sons munitions company near Des Plaines; after Prohibition ended she returned home to live permanently with them during that war period (she would later become famous for playing Catcher In The Rye author Jodie Foster's mother on Broadway)). As part of effort to popularize American culture throughout Europe during that time period Al Capone placed billboards all around town proclaiming "Welcome To Our Town OfMoline" which continued into the early 21st century when those billboards were finally taken down due to vandalism etc.).
