One of the first optical accessories stores in East Moline, Illinois was The Optical Shop. This store was founded by R.B. Morse and opened on December 17, 1892. The Optical Shop was one of the earliest businesses to sell corrective lenses and eyeglasses. In 1951, The Optical Shop moved to its current location on Main Street in East Moline and became a part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Department of Optometry and Eye Care. In 1988, The Optical Shop merged with another East Moline business, The Camera Store, which had been operating for over fifty years. On November 15th, 1992, the store closed its doors for good after many years of serving the community from their original location on Main Street inEastMoline.
East Moline is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the bank of the Mississippi River. The population was 54,471 at the 2010 census. It is home to East Moline University and its adjacent college town of West Moline. The first known permanent European settlement in what is now East Moline was by French traders in 1679 as "Molineux". In 1803, United States troops burned down the village for refusing to surrender their supplies to General James K. Polk's army during his Invasion of Mexico. The site of present-day East Moline was surveyed in 1836 and named after Augustus Ewing, an American merchant who had purchased land east of the river from a group of Native Americans. In 1846, East Moline became part of the newly formed State of Illinois when it was created from parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa; it remained so until 1959 when it became a city under Illinois law. During this time there were two waves of immigrants – Irish and Germans – who brought new life to town and helped make it one of America's most diverse cities. In 1957, East Moline College (EMU) opened its doors for business with only 10 students; today EMU offers more than 350 courses across five colleges and schools that offer over 100 degrees including certificates and associate’s degrees as well asMTD programs which prepare men & women for careers in technical fields such as engineering or health care work. East Moline, Illinois is an unincorporated community in southwest Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now East Moline were the Pottawatomie Indians who occupied the land between present-day Rockford and East Moline in 1813-1814. Another group of early settlers arrived in 1847 when John Larkin purchased 160 acres (67 ha) of land from the state of Michigan and set out to found a town on it. Larkin's dream never came true because settlement by native Americans proved too difficult; however, some early pioneers did manage to establish themselves in what would become East Moline. In 1853, President James K. Polk awarded property along Cass County Line east ofpresent-day Rockford to Michael Reese for his work as a surveyor during the Polk Administration. Michael Reese's family founded the city of Chicago on this land in 1857 following their arrival from New York City that year. In 1912, Daniel Burnham organized a group of businessmen and entrepreneurs known as "The League of Nations" which aimed to promote economic development throughout Northwestern America through cooperative efforts with other countries outside Europe or North America during World War I."East Moline played an important role within The League," said Burnham at its founding conference on April 8th 1912."Moline was chosen as one of five sites for Headquarters...the city was named after Mr. Daniel Burnham." On December 12, 1812, the United States of America was created from the ashes of the Confederation of the United States. The area now known as East Moline became part of that new country. In 1827, this area was organized into a town called Moline by Act 5 of the General Assembly. Moline's population grew rapidly after its incorporation and by 1840, it had reached 10,000 residents. On January 14, 1846, Moline became a city with voting rights and its first mayor was elected. In 1861, Moline joined fellow Illinois towns in declaring themselves abolitionist strongholds in response to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The following year saw violence between abolitionists and pro-slavery mobs throughout the city; however, Mayor John A. Pemberton negotiated a truce and worked to keep peace until 1865 when Lincoln issued his second Proclamation abolishing slavery in all U.S. territories except for Minnesota and California which would become states only after their admission into the Union as constituent parts of Illinois under statehood on November 3 that year. A fire destroyed most of downtown Moline on July 20th & 21st 1871 while many people were within range;[1] this event is commonly cited as one reason for declining business activity during this time period although there are no definitive evidence to support this claim
