East Moline is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to set foot on the present-day site of East Moline was Portuguese explorer Álvaro de Saavedra on July 3, 1492. A day later he and his men discovered an island in Lake Michigan which they named "Molinha". An early settler in what is now East Moline was Nicholas Sacco and Bartolomeu de la Garza who arrived from Lisbon in 1686. They built a cabin on what is now First Street and started farming land that would become the town's core today. In 1836, Fayetteville Township were organized when two sections of Springfield Township were divided by fire (the township had been organized four years earlier). Fayetteville Township contained all of what is now east village except for some areas west of State Road 21 that became part of Park Ridge before it was annexed into Park Ridge in 1928. In 1892, voters placed a question on the ballots whether or not to create a new city within the township limits; this suggestion was rejected by residents as they desired to keep their close-knit community separate from neighboring municipalities. However, a few months later representatives from Park Ridge persuaded East Village residents to allow their city status quo be changed so that they would have representation on park benches - an event which has still been celebrated every year since then as East Village Day. In 1906, canal workers began construction on Kedzie Avenue which connected Watertown with Chicago via Canal Street and ultimately led to more jobs for people living near Lake Michigan than anyone else in Illinois until Prohibition ended those same jobs twenty years later (Kedzie Avenue remains one of downtown Chicago's most heavily traveled corridors). By 1925 there were over 2,000 people employed directly or indirectly by the canal company working along Kedzie Avenue; this number did not include employees working for other businesses associated with bicycle manufacturer Daimler's dealership across Canal street at 6th & State Streets which also financed much ofChicago's streetcar system during this time period (Daimler bought out Kedzie Avenue owners Harry Jaffe and Julius Rosenwald in 1929).
