In 1852, James Hargrave purchased 2 acres near present day Main Street from John Tilton for $100 cash plus 10% interest payable annually thereafter. This purchase marked the beginning of what would become known as Hargravetowns development area which encompassed much of what exists today within downtown Lansing or even beyond it depending on how you count things- most notably Huron Avenue between Shiawassee Avenue and Cass Corridor which became known variously as "Oakland Boulevard", "Michigan Avenue" or simply "Haggerty". The growth of downtown Detroit led to an increase in business activity within central Michigan so businesses began moving into areas such as Haggertytowns where there were already quite a few residents with some feeling that downtown had outgrown its original purpose - becoming instead more like an upscale shopping district rather than a center for education or industry.
