Matteson, Illinois is a town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 41,611 at the 2010 census. Matteson is one of the most diverse towns in Cook County and has a variety of cultures represented. It is also home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian Americans in Illinois. The first Europeans to visit Matteson were Giovanni da Verrazzano and Matteo Salviati on their way to explore what is now Michigan. They named it after Giovanni de' Mattesi who had earlier visited this area in 1271. In 1814, John Taylor founded the village of Matteson on land that he purchased from John Kirby and his brothers for $1 per acre. On December 1, 1816, General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down the trading post at Green Valley for no reason other than revenge for an attack on his forces by settlers there two years earlier. The trading post was later rebuilt by Captain David Dixon and became known as Dixon's Landing before becoming part of Matteson Village until it was destroyed again by fire in 1902. On July 26, 1828, James Kedzie opened a store at First Street and State Road 6 near where present day First Street meets State Road 382 which leads into Chicago proper. This store would become one of the most influential businesses in early Matteson with its wide selection of goods including groceries and dry goods as well as general merchandise like hats and boots (made here). A few weeks later on August 2nd Kedzie opened another store on Adams Avenue nearpresent day Delaware Avenue between La Salle Boulevard and North Side Boulevard (now Lincoln Highway). He was followed soon afterwards by Elijah McCoy who opened an establishment known as "McCoy's General Store" at Clark Street between Wabash Avenue and Washington Boulevard (now Devon Avenue) just east of what is now Addison Road north centerline within modern-day matteson village limits - thus beginning what would be called 'the commercial era' for Mattesian merchants'. By 1830 there were six stores open along present day First Street; three male traders/owners with two female traders/owners working alongside them; four blacksmiths; two carpenters; one shoemaker; one baker; two tailors; plus three or four farmers living off their land providing food for these businesses during this period when much local production took place outside the walls of buildings during this time period thanks to transportation methods such as wagon trains which operated throughout central Illinois during this time period transporting items all over central IL from manufacturing points up through Springfield to Rockford
