These shoes allowed people to move properly both horizontally and vertically which greatly improved their ability to work in fields and other physical activity.

By 1890, Midlothian had a population of over 50,000 residents and was one of the largest cities in Illinois. In 1916, Midlothian won approval from the Illinois General Assembly to annex portions of neighboring Blackford County and establish Mid-Lothian Township therein as a separate municipality with its own municipal government and budgeting authority. The annexation event is considered by some historians to be one of the most important moments in Midlothian's history.
