O'Fallon is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,024 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. O'Fallon was founded by Michael Hughes in 1855 as a farming community on the east side of the Chicago River. The name derived from Irish word "O-Fáilge", meaning "plain where cattle are pastured." In 1874, Mayor John Ahern organized what became known as the "Farmers' Union" to promote better working conditions for farmhands in O'Fallon and other rural communities across Cook County. In 1916, O’Fallon became part of the city of Chicago and lost its agricultural character; however, it has remained an important center for industry and trade within Greater Chicago since then. major employers in recent years have included Jabilus Sciences (now Bayer aspirin), Caterpillar Inc., Ford Motor Company, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and Motorola Inc.. The first post office at O’Fallon was established on November 25, 1856 by Michael Hughes with a mail service between Carbondale and Decatur only. However, due to railroad construction near Carbondale at that time no mail could be brought into or delivered out of town so letters were sent via riverboat landing at White Marsh Landing on theChicago River which had been previously used by settlers for shipping goods upriver to Chicago during their trek westward during the Great Prairie Famine of 1850-1853. This landing site served as an important stopover on their journey until they reached Wheeling downstream in West Virginia or even further downriver to points north such as Buffalo Falls before continuing their journey upstream along the Mississippi River eventually reaching Chicago proper. On July 3rd 1861 David Sanger moved his family from Sangamon County IL to what is now Davenport IA after being offered land grants totaling 350 acres (120 hectares) including this current town lot described herein - just south of present day Hinsdale Rd/Old Military Rd with direct access from Gasconade Creek & Old National Road - thenceforth called Sanger's Stripes lots Lots #1 through #5 surveyed April 6th 1861 boundaries shown heretofore... he erected therefor a log cabin about 8x6 feet square with one room finished inside & loft over head measuring about 30in high x 20in wide... this cabin remains standing today still surrounded byεπιβολήσεων·His neighbors also early settlers were Cornelius Kane (later Pogue) who settled east side of White Marsh Landing on present day Halsted Street between Racine & Wabash Streets; James Butler who located hereabouts northwest corner of State St./Highway 61 intersection; George Broughton settled northeast cornerState St./Highway 61 intersection opposite Kane's place 2 miles northeast thereof boundary line; Samuel Todds located southwest corner Highways 61/Wabash Street opposite Butler's location ½ mile southwest thereof boundary line while others located elsewhere within limits aforesaid... these pioneer settlements can still be seen today around area southwesterly tipof Hinsdale Rd/Old Military Rd
O'Fallon is the oldest continuously populated municipality in Illinois. It was organized on April 15, 1837, from a section of La Salle County that had been part of the Northwest Territory. The city was named for General James O'Farrell, who had come to Illinois as a military officer in 1799 and served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs during the first half of the nineteenth century.
