Pekin is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Pekin was founded in 1839 by Samuel Pekin and his family as a trading post on the upper Vermilion River. The original log cabin known as Pekin's Cabin still stands today. Pekin began to grow rapidly after its incorporation as a village in 1889. In 1925, it became one of the first townships in Sangamon County to be established with a vote by its citizens. When the county was created from parts of Cook and Kane Counties in 1966, Pekin was transferred to Sangamon County along with all of Kane Township (now Greenfield Township). The Village of Pekin has continued to grow since its incorporation and annexation into Tower City in 1989; today Tower City includes portions of both villages combined within their boundaries. The total population for both villages is over 2,000 residents! In 2015-16, Park District officials announced that they will demolish two buildings on Waveland Avenue which are considered blighted properties due to their aging infrastructure and lack of use or investment by local businesses since they opened in 2014; this event coincided with plans for future development adjacent to those buildings which would include housing and retail space. In 1870–71 (the year before Chicago was founded), Pekin experienced one of its most dramatic changes when two brothers named Amos and Solomon Snyder bought land northeast of town and began laying out what would later become North Side Park Estate., Now known as North Side Village., They also established what is now known as Midtown Business District which included most of downtownPekin back then including much of north side park estate today
