They started a sawmill and dry goods store here that still operates as a business today. A post office was established in 1860 and named after General George Washington Peahener, one of the original settlers in what would become Pekin. The village had its peak growth around 1870 when it had over 100 residents and two churches serving those living here including St John's Lutheran Church which was built in 1865 and remains operational today as one of the most well-preserved buildings in town. By 1890, however, the population had declined to 50 residents due to increasing competition from neighboring towns such as Rockford and Chicago Heights on both sides of the tracks (the first railroad reached Pekin by way of Rockford on May 8th, 1868). But despite these challenges (and some quite harsh weather conditions), something began to happen during this time that has made Pekin one of America’s largest farming communities: innovation! With new methods for irrigation systems, better seed varieties and increased use of fertilizers came new possibilities for agriculture; things that continue to be crucial for food production even today! Finally arriving here from outofstate were Prairie View A&M University students who brought their Agricultural Experiment Station back home with them after World War II! This gave us our modern day “garden city” – housing more than just farmers but also professionals working within agriculture like engineers, scientists and marketers; all helping make sure we have enough food to eat while still providing jobs for locals!

Pekin, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 24,782. The first permanent settler in what is now Pekin was Nicholas Peake who arrived in 1781. Peake's land was along the Fox River and he named it after his friend and mentor Edmund Pendleton. The community grew rapidly due to the construction of a railroad line through the area by Northern Illinois Railway Company president James J. Hill in 1873. In 1896, Pekin became an incorporated town under the name of "Pekin". The first post office opened in Pekin on December 5, 1896. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses operating out of town including a bank, grocery store, train station and several churches. During World War II Pekin experienced great growth as soldiers from all over Italy came to fight for America during the war effort. American munitions plants were built here and thousands of jobs went into production that paid good wages with no benefits awarded to those working long hours at low payouts while others risked their lives serving our country abroad or being drafted into military service without proper preparation or consent forms from their families back home. After the end of World War II many people returned home to find their towns had changed very little; however some small businesses had closed up shop because they could not compete with larger local companies which moved into newly available sites or relocated within city limits when these areas became more commercialized postwar-style . In recent years much has happened in Pekin; starting with the opening of a new high school (K–12) following firebrand Superintendent Driscoll’s proposal that every student be able to leave proficiently prepared for college-level work by 2020s instead of just “okay” students completing remedial courses prepping them for college despite having graduated high school? This program saw unprecedented success as matriculated students have averaged almost 60% above median grades since 2006! That same year saw continued progress with installation of 4 new schools- 3 K–8th gradeinderaries located next door to each other (2006), 1 PreKindergarten through 6th grade Elementary School (2007), addition/ relocation/ renovation/updates to 2 middle schools which served both grades 7th though 8th (2008) followed by construction & dedication of brand new High School completed Fall 2009 bringing current enrollment up to 26k+! Alliance Schools also welcomed a student body this fall resulting in total enrollment increase from 12k+ last fall + 9k+ this Spring!
Pekin, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John Pekin and his wife Ann. The city was named for the Potawatomi word "pekin," meaning "a place to plant corn." Pekin died in 1853, but his wife continued to live there and raise her children. In 1861, the Union Army burned down the home of General Abraham Lincoln while he was being held prisoner at Fort Sumter. Pekin's widow moved to nearby Ottawa and raised her children there until her death in 1951.
