Pekin is a small, unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Chicago. It is served by the Pekin School District. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Pekin was Amos Sprague in 1837. Sprague built a log cabin on a bend in the Kankakee River and named it "Sprague's Corner." A post office called "Peki" was established at this point in 1846. The town took its name from Pekin Chief Joseph Pekin and his family who had settled there in 1847. The village of Pekin began to form soon after the village election on November 8, 1851 when three men - James Condon, Hiram Hubbard and Lorenzo Dowling - secured over $2 for expenses associated with erecting a school house and meeting hall. This led to the formation of the Village Board which provided for elections every four years as well as other important functions such as fire protection and street maintenance. In 1865, Charles Henton became one of the first trustees of Pekin Village School District No./5th Ward; he would serve until his death in 1903. During World War II Pekin played an important role not only because it hosted military training camps but also because much of central Illinois was destroyed during that conflict including much of what is now Cook County. More than 2 million bricks were produced during World War II in central Illinois alone! A large number of people moved away from Pekin after World War II; however most residents kept close ties to their small community through social activities such as dances and picnics held each summer at Mt Zion Cemetery despite being several miles away from downtown Chicago proper where many everyday events took place including stores, restaurants and schools
