Pekin, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Cook County and the second-most populous city in Chicago. The population was 83,617 at the 2010 census. Pekin is one of the few cities in Illinois without a metropolitan area designation. The first European to visit what became Pekin was Giovanni da Verrazzano on November 15, 1503, when he surveyed what would become Chicago from Wabash River to Michigan Avenue. He named it after Paquinone (present-day Padua), an Italian explorer who had discovered new land in that area in 1493-94. In 1818, John Marshall founded Marshall College there and named it for General James K. Polk because of his role as General Winfield Scott's military adviser during the Mexican War and as governor of Missouri during that conflict. The college moved to its present location in 1893 after becoming part of Northwestern University. The city was founded by Daniel Boone on October 10, 1824 as part of a larger settlement called Knoxville Township east of Chicago along the Sangamon River near modern day Joliette Heights neighborhood on Chicago's west side – then still rural and unincorporated territory known as Fordowen Township – which Boonese family bought from Cahokia Inc., an Iroquois tribe led by Chief Machesmiweahegon (Machete). Boundaries were set much later when Knoxville Township became .Cook County on March 4, 1847; Fordowen Township remained unincorporated until its annexation by Cook County on December 17th 1900 (). Pekin's history begins with some pioneer settlers who began arrive here following Indian Wars fought between Britain and America over land grants dating back to 1663 AD: Englishman John Potter settled hereabouts in 1785 while French Canadian Pierre Le Moyne arrived about two years later; both men lost their lives fighting for British forces against American forces nearby at Fort Dearborn (modern day Lincoln Park). Pekinging Indians also fought against British troops throughout this time period including one particular leader known as "the Great Sachem". On February 5th 1800s Isaac Neely sold 640 acres northeast of downtown Pekin to George Stephenson for $1 per acre () making him one of first white men to purchase property withinChicago limits outside Indiana or Ohio - he accomplished this through negotiations with local Native Americans living there at the time under Treaty Of Prairie du Chien which ended early conflicts over land purchases withinGreat Lakes frontier region
