Plainfield, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 4,528 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Kane County by population. The town is bordered by Kankakee to the south and east, West Dundee to the north and west, and Sangamon County to the northwest. The first settler in Plainfield was George Brown who arrived on July 6, 1814. At that time there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Plainfield Township. Over time, settlers started arriving from other parts of Illinois and Michigan Territory. By 1827 there were over 1,000 people living in Plainfield Township. The land that makes up today's Plainfield was first bought by John Holcomb for $3 per acre in 1837. As development increased around town, more land was bought and sold until all of present-day Kane County had been annexed into Plainfield Township during the late 1800s. In 1909, voters created a city charter for PlainFIELD which named it after its founder John Fentonplain (1807-1894). In 1924-1925 an election was held to change the name back to plainFIELD because some people felt it had been taken away from them when city hall moved to Chicago Heights during that period of time Since then many amendments have been made to the City Charter including changing it back again once more during 2006-2007 - this time as plainFIELD CITY OF PLAINFIELD IL

Plainfield is a small town in the state of Illinois, located primarily in McLean County. The population was 10,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded on October 24, 1836 by General William Hull and his brother-in-law, James Wilkinson. They named it after their parish in Hampshire County, England. The first post office was established in 1839. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad network and its access to water resources. In 1853, Plainfield incorporated as a village and became an independent city on December 3, 1865. On January 1, 1978, Plainfield merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form the current City of Plainfield with a population of 20,769 residents. On July 11th 1830 an American Revolutionary War soldier named John Reynolds platted what would become plainFIELD on land that he had bought from the Chisholm tribe of Native Americans for $10 dollars per acre (later raised to $20). The town site was bounded by Wabash River on the north side; Michigan Avenue on the east side; Sangamon River on the south side; and Oak Park Road on the west side ( later called "Drury Street"). For many years it remained within York Township boundaries but in 1857 when York Township was enlarged it included all of Mclean County which made plainFIELD part of Arlington Heights The plat for plainFIELD shows a rectangular lot measuring 80 feet wide x 50 feet deep x 15 feet high with one end towards Dearborn Streets corner and another towards Sangamon Streets corner forming two squares or almost perfect square blocks - this being followed soon afterwards by straight lines running northerly/southerly outwards from these two square blocks until they met again at Dearborn Street - only then did they start to curve gently round so that today's Drury Street became today's Prairie Avenue A few years later another plat for plainFIELD appeared showing 4 lots measuring 60'x30'x12'. At this time there were still no streets or roads running through our present town site other than what we now call Drury Street/Prairie Avenue
The town of Plainfield, Illinois was founded on February 14, 1837 by the merger of the two towns of East Plainfield and West Plainfield. The two towns had been separate since 1824.
