Rolling Meadows is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Rolling Meadows was platted in 1871 by John Davenport and his partners as a farmstead on the south side of what is now Calumet Avenue in the near east corner of present-day Rolling Meadows Township and North Avenue in the future Park West neighborhood of Chicago. The village first became known for its rolling hills and rich farmland, but it also had an early industrial history with several mills located there including one operated by George Stephenson's British Railways until 1913. In 1907, Rollin Gillespie bought land to build a new town called Gillespie Heights that would be adjacent to Rolling Meadows Village on what is now Northwestern Highway. The townsite name was chosen because Gillespie had been governor of Missouri when James Kelleher founded Rollin Gillespie Manufacturing Company in nearby St Louis County (now Missouri). The company became one of the largest manufacturers of cigarettes in Illinois before folding in 1951. In 1915, Rollin Gillespie donated land to create a park which eventually served as home to many local businesses and residents before becoming a public park named after him in 1966. From 1916 through 1922, Rollin Gillespie served as president pro tempore of the Cook County Board of Commissioners; he also chaired that body from 1923 until his death two years later. He was succeeded by his son-in-law John Fenton who held that office until 1948 when Harold Ivey took over for him on an interim basis pending appointment from the board permanent status quo ante formaliter elected by all members effective January 1st 1949 under state law entitled "An act establishing certain conditions precedent thereto respecting elections for office within this county" Also elected were Clyde Aiken vice president supervising press relations and Harry Jaffe secretary general during this time frame

The village grew rapidly after World War II as construction began on large-scale projects such as the University of Chicago's South Side Campus and Ford Drive, which connected Rolling Meadows with other villages in Cook County. In the 1970s and 1980s, Rolling Meadows became known for its large number of African American residents who worked in nearby Kenwood or Bronzeville. In recent years, however, much of the Village's activity has shifted towards healthcare and business services.
