The town of Roselle, Illinois was founded in 1852 by George Washington Carver and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the rose that grew in the Carvers' backyard. The first store in the town opened its doors on July 1, 1853. By 1865, Roselle had a population of around 50 residents. In the 1870s, there were two churches in Roselle- one called the Baptist Church and another called Christ Episcopal Zion Chapel. In 1878, groceries started to be sold in the stores in Roselle and it quickly became a popular place to buy goods. In 1903, when Jesse Wacker bought out George Washington Carver's share of the business, he renamed it Wacker's grocery store after himself. In 1916, when World War I broke out, many people fromRoselle enlisted in the war effort. Many of these men went off to fight during World War I and some never returned home; however, most of them managed to return home before their enlistment ended on November 11th 1918. After World War I ended, Rosie started growing grapes again which would give her income for years to come. From 1927 until she passed away in 1984 her son Fredrickson ran her store as well as being mayor from 1945-1949 and 1950-1957 also serving as village trustee 1945-1950 and 1951-1954 then as village clerk 1954-. After she passed away Fredrickson continued running her store until his death too aged 92 years old
