Roselle was founded in 1851 by Nathan and Abigail Rose. The town was named after the rose, because of its location on a small rise near the confluence of the Des Plaines River and the Chicago River. The Roselle post office opened in 1852, and the first store was built in 1865. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its natural resources and easy access to highways. In 1916, Roselle became one of the towns in Cook County that were annexed into Chicago. The population of Roselle peaked at over 10,000 in 1920, but declined thereafter due to heavy immigration from Europe. By 1970, only a few hundred residents remained in Roselle.
