Schaumburg is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 95,541 at the 2010 census. Schaumburg is the third-largest city in Illinois and one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. It is located on a small peninsula on Lake Michigan within the Chicago metropolitan area. The current site of Schaumburg was first settled by Germans in 1825 and was called "Schaumberg" (a word meaning 'snowbank'). A post office was established there in 1827. The name change to Schaumburg after Captain George Schaumburg's victory over an army of British soldiers at Peoria Heights on October 8, 1837. Captain Schaumborg had ridden into town with his followers when they discovered that the British were about to attack his position, driving them back and taking possession of all their equipment before joining forces with American units under General David Dixon to rout the British forces from Peoria Heights. In 1856, John Fenton built a gristmill on what is now North Avenue in Schaumburg. In 1861, he donated land for a public library which became one of America's first municipally funded libraries. In 1865, he also donated land for a new courthouse which served as both courthouse and jail until it burned down in 1906. In 1908–09, he endowed an endowed professorship at Northwestern University in Illinois where he remains today as Emeritus Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern University-Chicago Booth School of Business. He has been awarded numerous awards including two Pulitzer Prizes and six National Book Awards including one for his book "The Great Migration: A History." In 1830 Schaumberg had its first school when German teacher Johann Wehmuth moved into house #1 on West Side Road opposite Old Griggs Schoolhouse (now part 3 South Elm). After five years Johann Wehmuth moved away because he could not find enough pupils so that he could keep up with charges assessed against him by village trustees amounting to $10 per pupil ($160 total) plus board costs! It wasn't until 1840 when another teacher moves into house #2 - Wilhelm Kappel who taught school from then until 1850 due to financial difficulties caused by increased township expenses related to providing for more than seventy children living alone or together (thus counted as “pupils”), many attending already well-funded Lutheran schools outside of town; even though this group did not include any Southerners! Then from 1850 through 1860 four other teachers move into houses starting with Augsburgt Kappel who taught from then until 1863; this group included Friedrich Lichtenstein who worked there from 1865 thru 1870; finally Abraham Wagner started teaching there September 1st 1870….the last three are considered founding fathers…..from 1870 thru 1880 we only have records for three people—-Friedrich Lichtenstein(1870-1881), Abraham Wagner(1880-1888) & Auguste Kappel(1886-1901). So far only Augsburgt Kappel’s death record has been found! With only three records extant we can know very little about these early educators except that they were German nationals active primarily within their own homeland…………………………... Additional research may be needed if desired to better understand why some teachers left or retired early……………

Schaumburg is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,661 at the 2010 census. Schaumburg is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Schaumburg was organized on May 14, 1852 by the merger of two other villages: North West Side (now Skokie) and South Side (now Glenview). The first post office in Schaumburg opened in 1853. The first school was built in 1854. On November 12, 1860, the city of Chicago annexed Schaumburg making it a part of the city limits. It remained an independent municipality until July 1, 1963 when it became one of 60 townships within Cook County. The first fire department in Schaumburg was organized on December 7, 1859 with William Hickey as its first captain and Hiram Fenton as its first volunteer firefighter. In 1861-1862 there were two fires; both were caused by lightning and did not result in any damage to property or human lives. From 1865 to 1868 there were only four firefighters; three men and one woman served under Captain John Jahnke with assistance from nine civilians who contributed $10 each for their services as volunteers . In 1895 Chicago extended its jurisdiction over all municipalities within Cook County except for those located in Lake View Terrace outside the city limits which continued to be governed by their own individual officials until 1957 when that authority was consolidated into City Hall . For many years before this consolidation efforts townspeople voted separately on matters such as building permits or street cleaning while City Hall processed all requests through an appeals process which could take anywhere from days to months depending on what issue had been raised . This system worked well until 1955 when voters approved a measure allowing City Hall to make decisions without township input on matters such as zoning, building permits and street cleaning despite protestations from some residents who felt they should still have a say in these matters . On July 1st1963 Schaumburga became one of 60 townships within Cook County having no vote whatsoever at local level regarding issues like zoning, building permits and street cleaning despite protestations from some residents who felt they should still have a say in these matters
