Schaumburg, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,569 at the 2010 census. Schaumburg is located in the southern Chicago metropolitan area. It is part of the greater Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in Schaumburg are thought to be the Menominee and Potawatomi Indians who camped on the banks of the Ottawa River during the 17th century. The first recorded settler was John Pemberton who arrived in 1793 from England and named his land after his home country – Yorkshire (now Great Yarmouth). The town was platted on December 11, 1847 by Andrew J. Donoho, an Irishman with a background in law and government service as clerk of court for Kane County. Donoho had served as justice of peace for Cook County since 1834; he also served as treasurer of Illinois from 1840 to 1845 and as member of both houses of the Illinois General Assembly from 1845 to 1850. The town was named for Augustus C. Schaumburg (1802-1892), a millionaire entrepreneur who founded two major companies: First National Bank and American Can Company (later American Can Corporation). In 1903, Schaumbürg became one of twelve townships statewide which were consolidated into Cook County under its new charter due to population growth within that county during that decade; it remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it joinedCook County proper In 1969, Schaumburger voters passed a $1 million bond issue for local improvements such as better roads, libraries and fire protection; this bond measure also provided funding for school construction projects including four high schools and one junior high school opened between 1970-1974

It was located on the east side of Chicago and became a separate municipality on November 3, 1892. The first settler in Schaumburg was John Hirth who arrived in 1828. He built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. Hirth's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Schaumburg Township. On February 14, 1829, Rev. George Reardon officiated at the first meeting of what would become Schaumburg Township when twelve men present voted to form a township with four square miles (10 km2) of land area and $100 annual income from property taxes levied against residents within its borders. The original name for Schaumberg after John Hirth's cabin was "Hurststown". In 1835-36 Isaac Newton visited America and saw many towns but chose not to settle in any of them because he found their constitutions too restrictive compared to his own religious beliefs which forbid him from voting or owning property within city limits. Newton returned home and published an article about this trip titled "A New Englander Visits America" which aroused interest among other Americans who were considering moving westward into new territory claimed by Mexico during the Texas Revolution known as The Mexican War (1846-1848). A group of six friends set out from Holland via Lake Michigan on July 5th, 1840 with $5 each to journey 2200 miles (3200 km) across North America before arriving at Fort Wayne on October 15th 1840 having covered 7500 miles (11000 km) without rest or mercies! Shortly after they reached American soil their departure has been reported as being lost forever in history until discovered by surveyors working on laying road beds through thickets near present day Arlington Heights in 2002! Inscriptions recovered from stone markers commemorating their journey include: "Erected By Six Friends Who Came Overland From Holland On July 05/40 At Pembina River." These initial settlers were followed by others over time including: Captains Edward MacNeil and David Fetterman; Drs Samuel Mott & Jonathan Ferris; Mr & Mrs William Briggs; Messrs Augustus Kelley & Jacob Riessenbach; Drs James Pemberton & Amos Stiles; Revd George Reardon Sr.; Job English & His Sons ; Myron Mayfield Jr.; Wm Silliman Jr.; Frederick Wiseman during field work conducted between 1978-1981 along current US Highway 34 corridor within one mile (1 km) of where they purportedly stopped while traveling northbound near present day Arlington Heights! Aftermath of The Mexican War led to increased immigration rates throughout late 19th century leaving behind numerous Irish Catholic families who remain dominant today thanks to Air Force Base Aurora’s location just two blocks away from Schaumburg High School campus upon which many students also attend classes following school morning curfew every day excepting Christmas Day since 1959! Formerly part of DuPage County now Cook County On November 3rd, 1892, Schaumburg separated from Peoria Township and became its own municipality under the jurisdiction of Chicago metropolitan area. With its own government it began developing some unique features that continue to this day such as: laws governing elections being passed by both bodies instead of one only coming into effect upon signature by both bodies providing for staggered term lengths for members making sure all voices are heard prior to ratification leading up finally to general election held every three years even though mayoral term lengths have not changed since then nor have municipal appropriations been given annually subjecting councilmembers directly thereto rendering them essentially powerless should they choose not serve); establishment/operation of library system independent from township board with same funding source although it shares building facilities with township board headquarters notwithstanding attempts by latter group
