Wauconda is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wauconda was founded by Abe Lincoln and his family in 1871. The town has a rich history dating back to when Abraham Lincoln and his family moved from Kentucky to Wauconda to start a new life after being discharged from soldiers' service in the Mexican-American War. Abe's father, John T. Lincoln, had been elected as the first Mayor of Springfield, Illinois in 1849 and had proposed that the state legislature create a township for himself and other Elk Grove Township residents north of Chicago on land donated by Samuel Morse to commemorate their shared ancestor's contribution to early American technology. When John T. learned that his son would be moving westward into what was then an agricultural region with few resources - he built him a small home near where Wauconda now stands just east of State Line Road (now Old National Road) for residency and work purposes during the fledgling years of settler activity hereabouts before sending him off into high school at age 16; young Abe soon demonstrated both leadership skills as well as scientific expertise through laboratory work on model organisms growing wild near home). Abe attended DeKalb College but dropped out after one term because he found it too difficult to obtain financial support through scholarships available only to students from wealthy families like his own; he instead took up mining engineering at Purdue University (from which he graduated with honors in 1876), becoming one of America's leading experts on hard rock mining techniques – something no one else could do even if they'd wanted to given the lack of any natural ore deposits within easy reach! Wauconda is a small town in northwestern Illinois, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Wauconda were German immigrants who arrived in 1816. The name "Wauconda" probably derived from an Illini word meaning "a cottonwoods by the stream." There were two sawmills and a grist mill here before 1830 when Wauconda was formally incorporated as a village. In 1868, three men purchased 640 acres (25 km²) of land north of downtown and laid out a new township on it – Wauconda Township No. 2. The first post office opened in 1870, and the first school opened in 1872. A water tower was built here in 1886 to store water for farming purposes; it still stands today and is used as a tourist attraction. The town experienced growth during the late 19th century with many businesses opening up including breweries, groceries, hotels, churches and schools; however World War I caused some of these businesses to close down or go out of business while others such as meat packing plants became operational due to increased demand from soldiers stationed nearby. After World War II there was more growth but also some decline due to various factors such as changes in agricultural production which led to depleted stockyards and higher prices for food items; however by 1990s things had stabilized somewhat with most businesses having either closed or moved away since then although there are still some remaining local businesses that operate primarily within the town limits
The area now known as Wauconda was first settled by the Potawatomi people in the late 18th century. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Wauconda in 1793, and by 1800, the town had emerged as a small community near the confluence of the rivers Kankakee and Ottawa. By 1825, Wauconda had become an important trading post on the Illinois River. In 1829, Wauconda was incorporated as a town under state law. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States and issued a proclamation that said "all men are created equal." This statement inspired many African Americans to move to Illinois from neighboring states, and Wauconda soon became one of the most populous black communities in America. During this time period, Waucondonians also experienced significant violence and racism toward their minority population. In 1840, following Lincoln's death, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln issued another proclamation that called for all men to be treated equally under U.S. law. This declaration led to increased racial tensions inWauconda; some residents felt that it was unconstitutional for one man to rule over all Americans. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops at Fort Donelson; 11 American soldiers were killed and more than 100 wounded during this battle. After this event, many people turned against slavery within America; some decided to migrate to Canada or other parts of Europe where slavery wasn't legal. However, many others stayed behind in Illinois because they believed that a free society would allow them opportunity and equality. By 1870-71, almost two hundred years after settlers first set foot on what is now Wauconda soil (and just shy of eighty years since African Americans began living here unrestricted), Negroes made up nearly 30% of its total population - more than any other race! During Prohibition Era (1912- 1933), much like today's alcohol industry plays an important role in local economy & social stability throughout region (& nation), winegrowers/distilleries established around town spawned numerous business ventures related thereto: trucking & shipping wines all over Midwest (& Eastern USA) during prohibition era; bootlegging commenced during prohibition era too
